There's a Zombie in the Basement Author Visits (K-3)

QUICK VIRTUAL VISIT (20 min, per session)

BASEMENT (40 – 60 min, per session)

  • 10 minute introduction: “A portrait of fear: how am I like you?”

  • 5 minute live reading of THERE’S A ZOMBIE IN THE BASEMENT

  • 20-30 minute interactive monster drawing demo and Q&A: drawing on the students’ own fears, I do some improvisational drawing to not only challenge myself to render a non-scary version of their phobias, but also to show them how I use simple geometrical shapes to design characters that are simpler to draw again and again for a story.

  • Optional 15 minutes for signing books (for smaller groups)

  • Size: small classrooms up to large auditoriums/gymnasiums

  • Virtual or In-Person

FINISHED BASEMENT (BASEMENT plus 45-60 min, per workshop)

  • DAREDOODLES: I use hands-on gameplay to demonstrate how shapes, letters, numbers, and even words can all be used to create monster character designs

  • Size: classrooms up to 30

DEMO PRESENTATION (40–60 min, per session)

  • 10 minute introduction: “A portrait of fear: how am I like you?”

  • 10 minute live reading of THE MANY MISFORTUNES OF EUGENIA WANG (Coming in Fall 2025 from Atheneum Books for Young Readers)

  • 25 minute interactive drawing demo: MAKING IT SCARY and Q&A: taking a non-scary suggestion from the students, I show them how staging, lighting,  backgrounds, gestures, and expressions are all tools an artist can use to make a harmless scene scary! I also to show them how I use simple geometrical shapes to design characters that are simpler to draw again and again for a story.

  • Optional 15 minutes for signing books (for smaller groups)

  • Size: small classrooms up to large auditoriums/gymnasiums

  • Virtual or In-Person

WORKSHOP (DEMO plus 45-120 min, per workshop. Choose one or more)

  • DAREDOODLES: I use hands-on gameplay to demonstrate how shapes, letters, numbers, and even words can all be used to create monster character designs

  • CHARACTER DESIGN: Hands on character design workshop using simple shapes to create repeatable character designs. Includes introduction to storytelling conventions of comics (45-60 min)

  • COMIC STRIP CREATION: I’ll teach short story arc formulas to create an illustrated 4-panel comic, which will introduce storyboarding and process. (60-120 minutes)

  • COMIC AND CARTOONING GAMES: Interactive comic and cartooning games designed to explore clear visual communication. (45-120 minutes)
